I looked her in the eye and begged her not to vote for Trump. I ended up doing it a number of times. Ultimately she wanted to vote for Trump because of the economy. The metric referenced were price of gasoline [Ten year pump price in Houston and Los Angeles (click the all grades toggle and then 'graph')]. The evidence was that gas was cheaper when Trump was president, which is true. The oil price is high now because of the Russian / Ukraine war. The sentiment seemed to be that if forsaking Ukraine [Link to Clinton Ukraine Nuclear Disarmament, Brookings Description, Additional Analysis] could bring oil prices down [Nature article documenting impact], that was OK. How does this connect to Trump? What will he do about the war in Ukraine that is different from Biden? The debate did not offer much resolution regarding differences in their policies, according to politico, however Trump did reference an aid number of 200 Billion USD when in fact the total amount was less, closer to 100 Billion USD. Trump's relationship to the Ukraine crisis is confusing, described here by ABC news. Ultimately he weakened NATO and withheld aid which could be argued is the reason Putin was emboldened to invade Ukraine. Biden seems to have limited impact.
What about rule of law? I asked. It is important to me. I don't think that it is to Trump, he doesn't respect the process and he doesn't surround himself with people that respect the law. He had a federal trial in New York regarding payment descriptions, [Description of charges] [Trump's own quotes about his prosecution] Here are quotes from him and his associates, showing mutual disrespect. Alternatively, Biden leads by respectful example [Biden's quotes about his own son's prosecution]. And, has, himself, not faced prosecution nor convictions.
What about respect for women? Evidence of Trump's sexual misconduct: [unwanted advances]. In response it was suggested to me that Jill Biden had been Joe's babysitter and that they met - this is [false].
The constant refrain is that politicians are all corrupt so it doesn't make a difference. I'm not saying one is good and one is evil. I am saying one is bad one is much worse. I am begging you not to vote for Trump.
